Function & Form is a sustainable practice business which upholds traditional techniques to create natural, utilitarian pieces for slow living. Sophia designs and creates all pieces in small batches from her studio in North Yorkshire. Rooted in the belief that objects can be both sculptural and practical, Sophia creates pieces that bring joy and contentment when displayed in the home, yet serve a purpose in the house and garden every day.

Although Sophia strives for beauty in each product, utility is at the core of her work - making sure each product can be cherished not only for its beauty but for its functionality, as this is what makes sure we buy once and buy well. Trained in fine art and joinery, Sophia’s work bridges the two disciplines, creating its own functionally sculptural aesthetic.

With a history in stone carving, metal work and joinery, the inspiration behind all her work is the beauty of natural materials and their benefits around our homes. Sophia is driven by the understanding that incorporating natural elements indoors not only enhances our surroundings but also has proven benefits for mental and physical well-being. By surrounding ourselves with materials and objects that spark joy, we create spaces that nurture a more contented, balanced life.

Sophia works in sustainably sourced hardwoods, utilising wood which would otherwise go to waste. Fibres for brooms are all low resource fibres which are biodegradable. Each wooden product is finished with 100% natural and food safe Tung Oil and packaged in minimal paper packaging.
